As of November 23, 2020, there are 194 healthcare workers in Saskatchewan who have tested positive for COVID-19.

SUN, and other health care unions, have been asking the Saskatchewan Health Authority and the Government of Saskatchewan to provide details on how many SUN members have tested positive and, of those that have tested positive, how many have contracted COVID-19 in the workplace.

WHAT IS SUN DOING?
We have been asking for this information for months; to date, this information has not been provided.  SUN is concerned that workplace exposures have been not tracked appropriately, or at all in many cases and are following up with the SHA on the issue of tracking exposures.

It is SUN’s understanding, based on information provided by the SHA, that there was no mandatory tracking for health care workers and as such they are not able to provide the requested data.  Further, the SHA indicates it did not keep, nor does it have data relating to the source of transmission, including data on whether exposure occurred in a facility and/or through a PPE breach.

COVID EXPOSURE - WHAT YOU SHOULD DO

MEMBERS
Any exposure at work should be considered and reported as a near miss. Any SUN member who has tested positive for COVID-19, as a result of a workplace exposure or potential workplace exposure, should:

  1. Report exposure to:
    1. Local OHS Representative/Committee
    2. Workers’ Compensation Board (WCB)
    3. Personal doctors as a WCB report
    4. Your Local President/Executive
    5. SUN Provincial by calling Duty Roster
  2. Complete a Workplace incident report.
  3. Ensure a Workers’ Compensation Board report was properly filed.
  4. Contact SUN Duty Roster with any questions or concerns.
  5. Contact your Local President or OHS Committee with any questions or concerns.

OHS REPRESENTATIVES
If you are a member of your facility/worksite OHS Committee:

  1. Ensure the Local OHS committee is involved in investigations regarding workplace exposures.
  2. Request the SHA tracks and reports workplace exposures.
  3. Ensure members and employees have access to appropriate PPE, etc.
  4. Support and encourage members/employees to file a WCB report.
