Inaccurate, lacking research & evidence, insulting. Regina RN questions Leader Post pieces by Murray Mandryk and Steven Lewis in a letter to the editor:

Murray Mandryk’s May 11 column, “Saskatchewan RNs must truly put patients first,” was incredibly offensive and disrespectful to this province’s RNs. I’m an RN at the Regina General and Pasqua hospitals; never did I ever imagine when I began this amazing career that RNs would be so vilified for speaking out for their patients .

We pour our hearts and souls into our work every day because we love what we do and know we’re positively impacting people’s lives with every patient interaction. Most couldn’t picture doing anything else.

I’ve no doubt I speak for all RNs when I say we highly value and respect the entire nursing team, but we’re not the same. We don’t have the same education and skill set and we all have different roles to play when it comes to caring for patients. But therein lies the strength of our team.

I’m sure licensed practical nurses, critical care associates and everyone else feels the same. We all need to be doing what we’ve been trained to do, focusing on each other’s strengths and supporting each other to provide the best and safest environment for patients. That’s the only goal RNs have ever had when calling for our unique and distinct roles to be respected and acknowledged. Don’t patients deserve this?

I can’t imagine how RNs would’ve felt waking up to this article’s title.

Congratulations to Mandryk (and to Steven Lewis, author of a May 9 article) for insulting the integrity of 12,000 RNs in this province.
