SUN understands that members regularly find themselves in a difficult situation when it comes to voicing patient safety concerns. We also know that in order for any healthcare transformation initiative to be successful in improving the safety and quality of patient care in our province registered nurses need to be heard.

SUN members are frequently reporting they do not always feel comfortable communicating their concerns, and in some cases have felt intimidated when they have done so. We want to assure you that SUN continues to work on your behalf to make your voice heard and that your union is there for you if you have any questions or concerns.

On March 28, 2014, SUN requested a letter of protection, from the Ministry of Health, for all members coming forward with concerns relating to the impacts of model of care changes on patient safety or the application of Lean in their workplaces. The intended purpose of this letter of protection is to ensure that SUN members have a way to provide feedback on any changes they feel may be negatively impacting the safety of their patients without fear of retaliation.

As of today, April 8, 2014, we have not received a response to this request. In the interim, we are asking members to continue bringing concerns forward to SUN so that we can make sure you have the support you need.

SUN is committed to ensuring all members feel protected and secure in their ability to speak out in the interests of improving patient safety and quality of care. It is SUN’s role to move member concerns forward with employers and the government. Furthermore, we also need to hear from members if they are ever worried about any potential repercussions for raising their concerns with employers.

Please contact your Employment Relations Officer or SUN provincial directly to keep us informed. We will need your name and local number along with a detailed account of your concern so that we are able to follow-up with your facility and the Ministry of Health. Please be assured that protecting your confidentiality remains a top priority for SUN.
