On June 17, 18, and 19, representatives from the Saskatchewan Union of Nurses (SUN), Saskatchewan Health Authority (SHA) and Saskatchewan Association of Health Organizations (SAHO) met to continue discussions.
Conversations focused on a number of articles that are of significant interest to both parties and are particularly impactful for the future of SUN members in terms of how they do their work, where that work takes place, and what protected options members have when the employer introduces changes. This included some difficult conversations in areas such as merger, transfer, closure, and conversion, as well as language related to mutual shift trades and named day replacements.
The employer is messaging that further reorganization will be coming but without providing detail or context on what those changes will include or what the implications of such changes would entail. Clear, specific language is of value to both parties, but in order to develop effective language and solutions, having context on what the work will be, where it will exist, and how it will be organized is crucial.
The Committee is persistent in asking questions to clearly understand the employer’s future vision and plans. Conversations have been heated at times, but that is to be expected on such important topics. There has also been a lot of productive discussion, and progress is occurring.
The Committee is pleased to report that there has been further sign-off, with agreement on Time off Between Shifts and Shift Changes and Notification of Sick Leave. The Committee continues to take a positive, solutions-focused approach while being fully committed to protecting and supporting SUN members and the vital work they do every day to safely care for patients in every corner of the province.
SUN’s Bargaining Committee looks forward to further progress and good discussions when negotiations resume on September 3, 2025.
