When I speak to SUN members, I constantly hear of the heartbreak and frustration that comes from caring for patients in a system on life support.

I hear about members feeling disrespected after being ignored for so long, but I also hear about an undying resolve to make things better. This fighting spirit is part of who registered nurses are. It is also the foundation of the labour movement. After all, uniting to fight for what's right is why we celebrate Labour Day.

This year, I'd like to remind you of your enormous power and influence as professionals and union members and the collective knowledge you possess to lead change. Registered nurses know the answers, and it's time we made this abundantly clear to decision-makers.

Keep speaking to your elected officialsdemanding they prioritize safe patient care and safe staffing. Make it crystal clear that when the rubber hits the road, and they are canvassing for your vote this fall, they better present a workable plan to address the healthcare and nursing crises. The candidate who commits to safe staffing will get my vote. It's time we remind the government of its accountability to patients and those dedicated to caring for them. Labour activism has many forms, and this fall, using your voice and your vote are your most effective tools.

In Solidarity,
