On Labour Day, we pause to honour and reflect on the generations of workers whose struggles, sacrifices, and solidarity paved the way for the collective rights we enjoy today. As SUN members, we are part of a proud legacy built on resilience, advocacy, and the unwavering belief that we and our patients deserve better.
When SUN was founded 51 years ago, Saskatchewan's nurses had little say in their working conditions, and there was virtually no support or benefits to speak of. But instead of remaining silent, they stood up. They organized. And together, they formed a union to demand change.
While we've made incredible progress over the years, such as maternity benefits, sick leave and improved ability to use professional judgement, many of the challenges our founding members faced persist today—unsafe staffing, burnout, and a lack of recognition. But just as SUN members have done before, we'll continue to rise.
I know you are frustrated. I know the system continues to ask more from nurses while offering less in return. However, you are not alone, and you are not powerless. SUN is your union, and your strength is its foundation.
So, in the spirit of Labour Day, I have an ask of you. More than ever, I encourage you to get involved with your locals, attend SUN events, advocate for your patients, file WSRs and share your voice.
Above all, trust in your union, the power of the collective and challenge situations where there may be a violation of the rights we’ve fought so hard for. We've been through tough times before, and we've come out stronger. Now is no different.
This Labour Day, we don't just celebrate - we recommit.
To fairness.
To respect.
To advocacy.
To each other.
We are here for you. Always.
In solidarity,
Bryce Boynton, RN
President, Saskatchewan Union of Nurses
