One of the most common questions on our Facebook page is: What’s the difference between RNs and LPNs?

The University of Regina and Saskatchewan Polytechnic, who jointly offer the Saskatchewan Collaborative Bachelor of Science in Nursing (SCBScN), have provided a clear answer. The institutions performed a 2011 review of the different curricula while reviewing the components of the bridging program they offer for LPNs to become RNs. It was determined that LPNs graduating after 2008 would be eligible for 27 credits (or less than one year of study) towards the four-year/120 credit RN degree. In contrast, Diploma RNs (RNs who graduated prior to 2000) are eligible for more than double the transfer credits. Diploma RNs in Saskatchewan can enrol in the Post-Bachelor of Nursing (BN) Program at Athabasca University to study towards the BN Degree. The University of Regina does not offer a bridging program for Diploma RNs. Athabasca University awards 60 credits of prior learning to diploma RNs.

While it may look like registered nurses and other care providers perform the same “tasks” it is important to look deeper and understand the role and function that the registered nurse performs. It’s not just about length of studies, but the content and focus of the different educational programs too.
