Saskatchewan schools will not reopen before the end of the current school year, according to an update from the Regina Catholic School Division (RCSD).

All schools in the province closed down on March 20, and because of the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic, students will not return to the classroom before the summer holidays.

RCSD posted an update for families on its website on Wednesday.

“The provincial government’s Response Planning Team (RPT) has updated school divisions in Saskatchewan with the news that schools’ supplementary learning will continue remotely for the rest of the 2019-2020 school year,” the post said.

“This means students will not be returning this school year … Our staff will continue to work with your children in the manner which has been established.”

Saskatchewan schools have been closed for seven weeks now, after the provincial government suspended classes indefinitely to help prevent the spread of COVID-19.

At the time, the province said the criteria for closing schools is based on a number of factors, including evidence of sustained transmission within the community, rapid increase of local cases and transmission without a known link to travel or confirmed cases.

Since then, education has moved entirely online, with teachers modifying lessons to be taught through pre-recorded videos and video calls with their students. Parents have also been figuring out how to keep their children learning at home.

Students will receive a final grade based on their current grade. All Grade 12 students who qualify for graduation will still graduate, and all students will move to their next grade level come the fall.
