Contact tracing and the reporting of close contacts are so important to reducing transmission. Today’s announcement sets up our schools and communities for even faster spread of COVID-19 as both case numbers and hospitalizations continue to rise.
The government has maintained that individuals should do a “personal risk assessment” when going about their daily lives, but how can the public assess something when they don’t have access to the information they need?
When our communities are sick with COVID-19, our healthcare system is sick with COVID-19. As cases climb, the capacity to provide safe and high-quality care for patients is dropping as beds fill up. As community transmission runs out of control, healthcare staff are themselves forced to call in sick, putting further pressure on a system already stretched to the limit.
In just the past two weeks hospitalizations have more than doubled and ICU admissions have more than tripled. This is not the time to take our foot off the brake pedal and encourage even more rapid circulation of the virus in our communities.
