SUN is pleased to announce that on August 20, we successfully signed a settlement agreement resolving numerous outstanding Recognition of Previous Experience (ROPE) grievances. This important settlement specifically addresses Internationally Educated Nurse (IENs) members whose prior experience was not acknowledged when their salary step was implemented.

What does this mean for IENs?

  • IENs who filed a grievance for this issue will have their previous experience properly assessed by the Employer and will receive a retroactive payment if they were not placed on the appropriate step of their salary scale. Retroactive payments will date back to the grievor’s Letter of Appointment or October 1, 2023, whichever date is most recent.

  • For those hired as graduate nurses who became registered within the first eight (8) months of employment, the same process will be followed, and if retroactive payments are required, they will be based on the date of successful writing of their exam, the date of their Letter of Appointment or October 1, 2023, whichever is most recent.

  • The Employer has committed to providing any retroactive payments as quickly as possible, with a final deadline of October 9, 2026.

Please note that the SHA may contact affected members directly if further information is required to complete their assessment. SUN will be notified of any such requests for additional disclosure.

We recognize the patience and perseverance shown by our IEN members throughout this process, and we are proud to have reached this resolution on your behalf.
