SUN signs Saskatchewan Health and Safety Leadership Charter

(Regina) June 14, 2012:  The Saskatchewan Union of Nurses (SUN) has publicly solidified its commitment to promoting healthy and safe workplaces and communities with the signing of the Saskatchewan Health and Safety Leadership Charter. SUN officially added its name to a growing list of organizations with a shared goal of reducing work-related injuries and illnesses in the province at a signing ceremony hosted today by Safe Saskatchewan.

The purpose of the Saskatchewan Health & Safety Leadership Charter is to affect a cultural shift in the way Saskatchewan leaders view injuries and injury prevention as well as advocate for the continuous improvement of health and safety strategies and performance.

“It is an honour to sign this Charter on behalf of SUN,” states SUN President, Rosalee Longmoore, “We have long recognized the importance of putting the health and safety of employees, their families and the community above all else, and this formally demonstrates our dedication to this principle.”

SUN becomes the first health care union in Saskatchewan to sign the Charter and hopes this will set a precedent for more to follow.

“SUN is signatory to the Charter as both an employer and a trade union representing almost 9,000 Registered Nurses(RNs), Registered Psychiatric Nurses (RPNs) and Registered Nurse(Nurse Practitioner)s (RN(NP)s) in Saskatchewan” continues Longmoore “This is therefore a significant step in working towards improved health and safety standards for all health care workers in the province.”
