SUN members’ voices are making a difference. But there’s more work to do.

After years of speaking out about violence and unsafe conditions in all areas of Saskatchewan’s health care system, government and the SHA have launched an independent review of hospital safety and security. Recent actions, including the installation of metal detectors at some emergency departments, happened because SUN members came forward and shared their experiences.

Now, there is another opportunity to help drive change.

Registered nurses are encouraged to share their stories, concerns, solutions, and urgent calls for action directly with the independent review team by emailing: safety@buckinghamsecurity.com

Registered nurses and SUN must be part of this review. Registered nurses are the largest group of health care providers and are disproportionately impacted by workplace violence every day across the system and province. Your frontline experiences and solutions must be heard. Make this message clear.

According to SUN’s March 2026 survey of more than 1,800 members:

  • 78.2% report experiencing physical violence in the workplace

  • Nearly 69% say the violence occurred within the last 12 months

  • 92.6% report experiencing verbal abuse in the workplace

  • 88.1% say that abuse occurred within the last 12 months

Below is only a small snapshot of what registered nurses are experiencing across Saskatchewan:

“I was repeatedly kneed in the stomach during early pregnancy by an agitated patient waking up in PACU.”

“Years ago, we had a severe assault on one of our nurses, who is still off work due to the injury and will never return.”

“During a night shift in our ER, a coworker was restocking a linen drawer when she discovered a gun hidden inside.”

“I am anxious and so very frustrated. It is literally going to take a dead body before the SHA does anything to assure safety in our facilities.”
